I recently joined the HR Odyssey, a 6-hour study-a-thon organized by People’s Partner PESU and the BBA Department at PES University. This event was more than just a competition was a full learning experience that helped me grow, not only as a student but also as someone interested in HR and communication.

And the best part? My team managed to secure 3rd place!🎉

Let me take you through my experience,

✔Round 1: This round kicked off the event and set the tone for what was to come. We were given real-world HR problem statements that made us think deeply. We had to analyze the given situation, discuss possible solutions as a team, and present our ideas clearly and confidently.

✔Round 2: In the second round, we had to create an ATS-friendly resume. If you don’t know what ATS is — it stands for Applicant Tracking System. Many companies now use these systems to scan and filter resumes before they even reach a recruiter. This round taught us how important structure, keywords, and clarity are in a resume. We learned how to present our achievements and skills in a way that not only looks good but also works well with technology. I had always focused more on the content of my resume, but now I understand that formatting and language matter just as much.

✔Round 3: And then came the final and most exciting round — the Rapid Fire! One of my friend had to answer five HR-related questions in quick succession, under a time limit. The questions covered basic HR knowledge, recent trends, and common workplace scenarios. It felt like a quiz show — the pressure was high, but I kept my cool and answered with confidence. It pushed me to think quickly, stay composed, and trust my knowledge — skills that are very useful in real-world situations.

Key Insights from each round:-

✔We were provided with a detailed background and a problem statement that revolved around supplier credit ratings and financial risk management.

✔So, our challenge was developing a scoring model that assigned supplier’s credit ratings based on financial and non-financial parameters.

✔To make this model genuinely robust, we had to incorporate real-time data sources, including transaction history, payment behavior, industry risks, and macroeconomic trends.

✔Additionally, we worked on enhancing risk mitigation strategies, enabling businesses to proactively manage supplier-related financial risks.

✔The ultimate goal was to improve decision-making for procurement teams, ensuring that they engaged only with reliable and financially stable suppliers.

✔This task required a deep understanding of financial analytics, data interpretation, and strategic foresight—making it one of the most intellectually demanding yet rewarding parts of the competition.

✔In this round, our group was represented by a dedicated member who participated in the Quiz rounds. These rounds featured a diverse set of generic questions specifically focused on the domain of finance.

✔The core idea was to quickly get our product in front of potential customers to gather real-world feedback and validate our assumptions with concrete data. To achieve this, we developed a working prototype, a tangible representation of our MVP, which we then presented to investors to demonstrate its potential and solicit their insights.

However, this also meant a dilution of our ownership—a trade-off that had to be carefully evaluated. This exercise underscored the importance of balancing financial gains with strategic partnerships. One of the most thrilling moments of the competition was the competitive auction, where I represented our team. In a high-stakes bidding war, I secured the renowned cricketer Andre Russell for ₹65 Lakhs—a strategic acquisition that significantly bolstered our team’s strength for the upcoming season. This experience honed my negotiation skills and reinforced the value of calculated risk-taking in business decisions.

In general, the Fin-a-thon was an eye-opener where we were able to gain more knowledge about financial analytics and improve our problem-solving skills even when we are short of time. It was challenging, but highly rewarding, and it showed us the importance of financial knowledge to be able to make a business successful.
